The Belayneh Kinde Group has opened a brand new electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Debre Birhan, Ethiopia. This plant cost $52 million to build and has the capacity to produce over 1,000 electric vehicles every year. Beyond job creation, this project will generate 1,000 new employment opportunities in Ethiopia, contributing to economic growth. It will also help the country become more self-sufficient by manufacturing vehicles locally instead of depending on imports from other countries.
Facility Specifications and Production Capacity
The manufacturing plant spans 9,000 square meters and can produce minibuses, buses, and trucks. This broad production capacity will help meet the growing demand for eco-friendly transport in Ethiopia and across East Africa.
As the region prioritises sustainability and lower carbon emissions, demand for cleaner transport solutions continues to grow. Furthermore, the plant’s diverse manufacturing capability will support economic growth, promote sustainable mobility, and strengthen the region’s automotive industry.
A Milestone for Sustainable Development
The new EV factory marks a major milestone in Ethiopia’s transition to cleaner and more sustainable transportation. By manufacturing electric vehicles locally, the country is reducing its reliance on imported fossil fuels while strengthening its automotive industry. The investment also supports technological innovation, industrial growth, and long-term energy security. In addition, the factory is expected to create jobs, stimulate economic development, and reduce carbon emissions. This initiative reinforces Ethiopia’s commitment to sustainable development and positions the country as a regional leader in advancing electric mobility and clean energy solutions.
